Obituary for Ernest 'Ernie' Leroy Montoya
Ernest Leroy Montoya, known to all as “Ernie”, was born on February 16, 1950 in Morley, Colorado, which was near Trinidad, Colorado, to Frutoso Montoya and Daisy Muniz. Ernie is survived by his wife Veronica “Vernie”, and three daughters Denise Young, Lora Freeman and Leona Maestas. Ernie had one step-daughter Vicky Lopez and nine grandchildren, Anthony, Nikki, Breanna, Jake, Teniko, Kayla, Alonzo, Aden, Torin, and three step-granddaughters, Leah, Toni and Jill. Ernie is also survived by his first wife and dear friend Pearl Montoya, many loving in-laws, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of long time friends. Ernie is also survived by brothers and sisters, Albert Griego (Mary), Jerry Griego (Esther), Lucille Derrera, Julian Griego, Ed Griego, Joe Montoya (Connie), Trina Bussiagton (Richard), Betty Ann Fry, Janet Ryan (Don) and Christina Hallet. Ernie was preceded in death by his father, mother, step-father Frank Trujillo, his brother George and his sister Loretta. Ernie loved God, his family and his country. He served in the United States Army, receiving his training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He honorably served his country during the Vietnam war where he was airborne and earned his wings. Ernie loved to watch movies, especially war flicks and the military channel. He also liked to tinker in his work room, he loved to listen to country music and oldies and he enjoyed playing his guitar. He was a kind and gentle man. He had a good sense of humor and quick wit. He was always willing to offer a helping hand. Ernie will always be remembered and missed by his family, friends and all who loved him. He lived a good life and now he is with Our Lord in Heaven. Rosary will be at DeWitt & Tabler Funeral Home, located at 12114 Grant Circle, Thornton, Colorado, on Monday, April 21st at 7:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be at St. Augustine Catholic Church, located at 178 South 6th Avenue, Brighton, Colorado, on Tuesday, April 22nd, at 11:00 AM. Reception will follow at St. Augustine. Interment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery, located at 4400 West Kenyon Avenue, Denver, Colorado, on Wednesday, April 23rd, at 11 AM, at Staging Area A.
