Obituary for George Ralph Magnuson
Afterglow by Helen Lowrie Marshall I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I’d like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun of happy memories that I leave behind when day is done. Always smiling… George Ralph Magnuson passed away peacefully on October 14, 2014, with his family by his side. George was born in Greeley, Colorado on November 13, 1928, to parents Albert and Gertrude (Carlson) Magnuson, and was the youngest brother to siblings Albin, Bernice and Alf. George grew up farming and going to school in the Greeley area before serving in the National Guard and later enlisting in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1948-1953. After his service, he returned to Greeley and attended Colorado State College (UNC). Upon graduation, George taught business classes in Kersey, Colorado and at Emily Griffith Opportunity School in Denver for several years, before beginning his career as a computer programmer/analyst with the U.S. Air Force Accounting and Finance Center. George married Shirley Firestien June 15, 1959, and they both settled in Northglenn, Colorado where they raised four children. After retiring from the Finance Center in 1983, George kept busy working at his nephew and niece’s (Charles and Sandy Grams’) family business for many years, and he also stayed active in his church, as well as working with the National Association for Retired Federal Employees. George was preceded in death by his wife Shirley, his parents, and siblings. He is survived by his children, Scott, Todd, Paul (his wife Paula) and Leslie, his granddaughters Marinda and Michelle, and his great-grandson Phoenix, as well as many other family members who he loved very much. George had a wonderful sense of humor and brought a smile to every occasion. His life was all about family and friends – his optimism and enthusiasm about life was contagious, and George’s smiling face will be missed by all those he touched. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2014, at 3:00 pm at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church; 10828 N. Huron St.; Northglenn, Colorado 80234. A reception will follow immediately after. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice
