Obituary for Henry S. Katayama

Henry Saburo Katayama wsa born on January 17th, 1930to Murano and Soichi Katayama in Brighton Colorado. He was the sixth of eight siblings. Hank grew up farming in Brighton, Colorado and graduated from Brighton High school (Cherry white fight -fight). As a youngster he enjoyed baseball, basketball and bowling. In fact, he later met his wife, Sachiko Matsushima in a bowling league. They were married on October 28th, 1956 and lived in Denver Colorado. They were happily married for 57 years. Hank was an accomplished gardener for many years before taking a job at United Airlines at Stapleton Airport where he was employed for 36 years. During that time, Hank and Sach kept extremely busy with their three sons, Danny, Andy, and Derrick. All three boys were involved with numerous school activities and sports. Hank taught his three boys all of the Katayama family values. Among them were the importance of spending time with family, keeping your eye on the ball, and how to always pick up the check. Hank’s tutelage did not stop with his own children. He was always happy to extend a helping hand to the numerous up and coming athletes and scholars in their family including children, cousins, nieces and nephews. He and Sach were very proud of their accomplishments and truly enjoyed supporting them in all of their activities. Hank and Sach also took great pride in spoiling their grandchildren: Katelyn, Addie, Kobe, and Kai. Hank can be very proud that his legacy will be carried on through his grandchildren. Those of you who knew Hank, knew how much he enjoyed spending time with family, and watching his family participate in sports. He also enjoyed traveling to different places to visit and support his children and grandchildren. There was that time he went to Japan because Danny was studying abroad for a semester in college. He travelled to Tennessee on several occasions to watch Andy and Derrick play college baseball together. He travelled to Italy to visit Derrick during his internship abroad. But let’s not forget Hank’s most exotic travel experience – when he drove to Des Moines, Iowa in a VW van with no heater in the middle of winter to get to Danny’s first job. Who wouldn’t want to travel there? As for Hank’s affinity for animals, he always enjoyed time with his cat Blackie and German Sheppard dogs, PAL, Kavik, and Dutchess. These are just a few of the memories that the family wanted to share with you. However, there are countless other stories and memories about Hank that you may want to share.
