Obituary for James A. Richards
James A Richards, 78 passed away peacefully at home September 9,2021 in Thornton, CO. Jim was born in Telluride, Co on August 20, 1943, to James & Jean Richards. At the age of 5 they moved to Montrose, CO. He graduated from Montrose High School in 1961.
He graduated from Colorado Mesa University in 1963 with an Associate in Commerce Degree. He obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Denver in 1968 and continued to receive his Master’s Degree from the University of Colorado. Jim also continued with various studies in Finance at the University of New York and Berkley University.
Jim started his career in Finance with various companies. He relocated to Denver and ultimately found his home working for the Colorado Public Utilities Commission and after 30 years of service he retired as the Chief of Fixed Utilities. In addition, Jim served as a Legislative Liaison with the Colorado General Assembly and the Governor’s office.
Jim was a faculty member and teacher at Colorado Western College and Michigan State University. He was a guest instructor at Ohio State University. Jim served as the Chairman for the NARUC staff committee. He also served on various boards throughout his retirement.
Jim was a lifetime member of the Montrose Elks Club.
Jim was always on the go. Jim and his wife Pam were avid Tennis players. They enjoyed Golfing and Biking. Jim loved his motorcycle rides across country. He also loved long drives and knew every backroad in Colorado. We called him “Backroad Jim”.
Jim and Pam traveled the world together. They enjoyed traveling throughout Europe and their Mediterranean cruise.
Jim was loved by so many and had long term friendships from his childhood. He enjoyed people and their life stories so much that he became a valued mentor to many individuals during his life. He was genuine and caring to everyone. Jim was also a great jokester and loved playing pranks on everyone. He had a marvelous sense of humor and a smile that radiated to the world.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Eloise, and his sons Eric & Sean. He is survived by his wife Pam, daughters Shauna & Jamie; grandsons David (Itza), Jacob, Jadon & Cavahn; granddaughters Taylor (Justin), Jasmin, Chloe & Autumn and his great grandson Rhoen.
