He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He received a Bachelor of Education Degree from Chadron State College, and attended the University of Nebraska two years to study business and economics. He was a Rotary Club member and an active singer all his life in various church, community, and barbershop choirs.
He was a Manager for Hested, Newberry & Lee retail stores in Nebraska and South Dakota and then became the Accounting Manager at the home office in Omaha. He ran his own store, Longstaff Variety, in the 70’s in DeWitt, Iowa. At the time of his death he had worked 22 years at Sam’s Club in Lone Tree, Colorado.
He is survived by daughters, Leslie Ann Foster of Littleton, and Terri Rydberg of Frederick, Maryland; son, John, of Littleton; grandchildren, Daniel (Rose) Rydberg, Andrew (Linda) Longstaff, and Corinna Foster; three great-grandchildren; and sisters, Mary Sue Perria of Traverse City, Michigan, and Phyllis Hahn of Littleton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis (Peach); and sister, Donna Rae Giese.

The best representation of our Dad was a book written by V.J. Smith called “The Richest Man in Town”. Although written about a man called Marty, it truly represents our father as we knew him. Please check it out and you will understand the man behind the smile.
