Obituary for Phylliss J. Adams
Phylliss Joy Stevens was born on the family farm, near the small community of Denver, Missouri in Worth County on December 2, 1931. She passed away after a lengthy illness on September 11, 2017, at home with her family by her side. She is survived by her husband, W. Keith Adams, her daughter, Jill Adams (Chris Williams), her brother Walter Stevens of Punta Gorda, FL.

Phylliss graduated from Grant City High School in Grant City, Missouri. She received her BS degree from Northwest Missouri State University in 1951. She received her Master’s degree and Doctorate degrees from the University of Denver.

In 1952, Phylliss married W. Keith Adams. In June of 217, they celebrated 65 years of marriage.

Phylliss taught in the Ames, Iowa Public Schools and the Denver Public Schools after receiving her Ed.D. She began a long career in University teaching in the field of Reading/Literacy. She was a professor at San Diego State University, University of Denver, Baylor University and California State University, San Bernardino. Phylliss was well known in Colorado, the United States and internationally for her speaking, consulting and writing in the field of literacy and reading.

Dr. Adams authored more than 40 books for young readers. She also published professional materials for educators.

Throughout her lifetime, Dr. Adams was actively involved in professional organizations and associations. She served as President of the Denver local council of the International Reading Association, President of the Colorado Council of the International Reading Association and as President of the International Reading Association. She spoke in over 30 states, as well as for international council in more than 10 countries.

She and Keith enjoyed traveling, visiting all 50 states and visited over 100 different countries. After retirement, Phylliss was active in three different book clubs. She also volunteered as an Ambassador at Denver International Airport for over 8 years.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that a donation be made to the Colorado Council of the International Reading Association (CCIRA), in honor of Phylliss J. Adams. The donations collected will provide scholarships to the yearly CCIRA conference held each February in Denver, CO. Phylliss would have wanted to promote CCIRA. A celebration of life will be held on 10/28/17 at 10:30 AM at Dewitt and Tabler, 12114 Grant Circle, Thornton, CO 80241. Following the service, a reception luncheon will be held at Stonebrook Manor, 650 124th Avenue, Thornton, CO 80241.
