Obituary for Randall James Medlyn
On Saturday, May 4, 2019, Randall James Medlyn, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away at the age of 67.
Randy was born on October 16, 1951 in Grass Valley, CA to Samuel and Jean (Alexander) Medlyn. He received a degree in Chemical Engineering from BYU, and served proudly as a Captain in the United States Army, earning many commendations, and then served in the Army Reserve until 1990. Randy worked as a Chemical and Mechanical Engineer for 40 years before retiring in 2018. On August 16, 1975, he married Jill Carson (deceased 1991), and on September 10, 1994, he married Lynda Osterhout.
Randy was known for his calm and steadfast presence, innovative thinking, mischievous smile and sky-blue eyes. There wasn’t anything Randy loved more than a road trip, and throughout his life he visited 48 of the 50 states, including a long-anticipated family trip to Hawaii in 2018. Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons were two of Randy’s favorite destinations. He also had the opportunity to travel abroad when he went to Italy in 2015 to celebrate his 20th wedding anniversary with Lynda. Randy was an enthusiastic Volunteer at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science for 15 years in Space Odyssey and later in Prehistoric Journey, a Volunteer Usher at DCPA, and a Volunteer Genealogist at the LDS Church. When he wasn’t volunteering, Randy loved Game Nights with his granddaughters, hiking at Bear Lake and Golden Gate State Park, and going to a movie on a Saturday afternoon.
Randy was preceded in death by his father and mother, Samuel and Jean, his first wife Jill, his brother Gary, and his stepson Christopher. He is survived by his wife Lynda, his four children, Benjamin, Erin (Hacker), Mariel and Jandee, his step-daughter Kelley (Staudenmier) and son-in-law Scott, his two step-granddaughters Caitlyn and Amber, his grandson Rocky, and his sister Sue Anne.
Randy was laid to rest at Broomfield County Commons Cemetery (Broomfield CO) with Military Honors.
