Obituary for Steven Braton

Steven Leslie Braton passed away on June 21, 2024, at home in Arvada, Colorado, under hospice care at the age of 75. He was born on August 22, 1948, in Moorhead, Minnesota, to D.E. “Sammy” and Margaret (Paulson) Braton. He was the first of three children, followed by siblings Daniel and Connie. He grew up on the family farm and attended Pelican Rapids High School, graduating in 1966.

Steve attended Bemidji State, graduating with a B.S. in Social Sciences. He married Audrey Berger on August 7th, 1970, in Detroit Lakes, and to this union one daughter, Mia, was born. Steve taught social studies and coached basketball at Holy Rosary Catholic School in Detroit Lakes, and joined the Knights of Columbus in 1971. In May of 1973, the family relocated to Golden, Colorado where Steve began a long career working at Foss Drug.

In 1980, Steve married Cynthia McIntyre and together they had three daughters, Amanda, Krista, and Lisa. The family made their home in Golden and later in Arvada.

Steve was a vital part of the Golden community. He took part in numerous city betterment events, chairing the annual Kiwanis Wine and Cheese scholarship fundraiser and taking on many roles, including Vice President of Ski Country, a worldwide collectible decanter division of Foss Drug. He was a well-known face at Foss General Store and at Home Depot in Golden, where he spent the last fifteen years of his career.

Steve’s kind demeanor, easy humor and warm heart created a positive response from all who knew him. Once he retired, he focused on his passions: stamp collecting, baseball, golf, and following politics. He will be missed deeply by his family who will remember his integrity, his intelligence, his natural talent for carpentry and DIY projects, and his willingness to give his all to anything that was asked of him. A fast-moving struggle with pulmonary fibrosis made his final years difficult, but his joy in his grandchildren and watching their progress helped sustain his energy until the last.

Steve was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Cynthia, who passed away in March 2024, his parents and grandparents, and his brother Dan.

He is survived by daughters Mia (Paul) Braton Parke, Amanda Braton, Krista Braton, and Lisa (Greg) Butler as well as grandchildren Dylan, Ashley, Blake and Brooks, his sister Connie (Ken) Meek, and nieces and nephews.

A joint celebration of life will be held for Steve and Cynthia at Table Mountain Event Center in Golden on Sunday, August 18th from 2-4 pm. Inurnment will be at Lake Ida Cemetery, rural Lake Park, Minnesota, at a later date.
